Editing of a book, research paper, website, newsletter or any type of article or document requires a series of steps -- from developmental editing and line editing to copyediting and proofreading.
Word by Word Indexing & Editing's services focus on:
Copyediting: This is a crucial step for catching and making corrections. Whereas developmental and line editing focus on revision, copyediting focuses on mechanical errors and inconsistencies in all copy, photo captions and graphics, including: grammar and punctuation, spelling, syntax and word choice, capitalization, continuity, consistent application of style. There is also a level of fact-checking for accuracy of names, numbers, URLs. A keen eye and good judgement are key.
Proofreading: This is typically the last step, when the document is in its final formatted version. Proofreaders check that all corrections from the copyediting stage have been applied, giving a final look at grammar, spelling, names, photo captions, etc.
Proofreaders check for formatting and typesetting issues to prevent bad end-of-line breaks or widowed or orphaned lines or copy that has been cut off; inconsistency in font type and size; inaccurate page number-order, and the like.
The goal is clean, error-free copy that is visually appealing, easy to follow -- and accurate.
