"Laurie was invaluable to my publication... She came through brilliantly, in rushed conditions, and at a fair price. She was wonderful to work with: clear, ordered, and most of all, detailed."

About Laurie Hlavaty
I am the sole proprietor of Word by Word Indexing & Editing Services, a business developed after a 22-year career at a daily newspaper in New York's Mid-Hudson Valley. There, I was a features writer, copy editor, page designer and Sunday section editor, as well as an assistant news editor on a nighttime copy desk. I also supervised the newspaper's digital archive.
These experiences -- and my love of the printed word -- all naturally led me to a career as an independent book and magazine indexer, copy editor and proofreader.
I am a deadline-driven individual who regularly garnered top performance reviews during my newspaper career and was recognized with Associated Press and Best of Gannett awards for column writing and page design. During my time as assistant news editor, I earned a Gannett Supervisor of the Year Award.
My training and education as an indexer include the American Society for Indexing Training Course; the Periodical/Database Indexing Course through Simmons College of Graduate School of Library and Information Science; and intensive one-on-one training with an expert indexer, followed by ongoing mentorship. Professional development includes webinars and attendance at industry-related conferences.
